Mandatory or voluntary internship, what you must state
Recruiters clearly distinguish between a mandatory internship (required by the study regulations) and a voluntary internship (without obligation). The difference is also decisive legally:
- Mandatory internship: no minimum-wage entitlement, no limit on duration, exempt from social insurance (except accident insurance)
- Voluntary pre-/post-study internship up to 3 months: no minimum wage, exempt from social insurance
- Voluntary internship over 3 months: minimum wage (2026: €12.82/h), subject to social insurance
Mention explicitly in the cover letter or CV whether you are looking for a mandatory or voluntary internship, preferably with the duration and a reference to the study regulations. That saves the HR department a round of queries.
