Chat with PDF is the fast, private answer to "What does my PDF actually say?". Upload your document, type a question in natural language, e.g. "What is the cancellation period in this contract?", and within a second get the most relevant excerpts plus page number. The entire process runs directly in your browser without uploading your PDF to a server. That makes the tool an ideal ChatGPT alternative for confidential PDFs such as contracts, medical reports, payslips or NDAs.
Technically it's a proven pipeline: PDF.js extracts text page by page, the text is split into chunks and indexed with Lunr.js using BM25/TF-IDF. When you ask a question, the algorithm retrieves the most similar chunks and presents them with citation. Optionally you can add your own OpenAI API key, then GPT generates a summarised answer, while the key stays exclusively in your browser storage.

Wie funktioniert KI-PDF-Suche?
Der Inhalt deines PDFs wird in kleine Textabschnitte (Chunks) geteilt und in einen Volltext-Index aufgenommen. Wenn du eine Frage stellst, sucht der Algorithmus die relevantesten Abschnitte mittels BM25/TF-IDF und zeigt sie als Antwort mit Seitenangabe an. Optional kannst du einen eigenen OpenAI-Schlüssel hinterlegen, dann generiert GPT eine zusammengefasste Antwort aus den gefundenen Abschnitten.
Ist mein PDF sicher? Wird etwas hochgeladen?
Nein. Dein PDF verlässt deinen Browser nicht. Die Text-Extraktion läuft mit PDF.js lokal, die Indexierung mit Lunr.js lokal, die Suche lokal. Wir sehen weder dein PDF noch deine Fragen. Wenn du den optionalen OpenAI-Modus aktivierst, sprichst du direkt mit OpenAI, auch dann sehen wir nichts.

Welche Sprachen unterstützt der PDF-Chat?
Die lokale Suche funktioniert mit Deutsch, Englisch und vielen weiteren lateinschriftlichen Sprachen. Du kannst auf Deutsch fragen, auch wenn das PDF auf Englisch ist, die Suche findet trotzdem relevante Stellen, sofern die Begriffe übereinstimmen. Im OpenAI-Modus ist sprachübergreifende Frage-Antwort optimal.
Wie genau sind die Antworten?
Im lokalen Modus zeigen wir wortgenau die relevantesten Stellen aus deinem PDF an, das ist transparent und nachvollziehbar, da du jede Quelle direkt siehst. Im OpenAI-Modus erhältst du zusammengefasste Antworten in natürlicher Sprache, allerdings nur so gut wie das gewählte Modell.
Funktioniert es auch mit gescannten PDFs?
Nur eingeschränkt. Gescannte PDFs enthalten Bilder von Text statt echten Text. Nutze zuerst unser OCR-Tool, um das PDF durchsuchbar zu machen, dann kannst du mit ihm chatten.
Wie groß darf das PDF sein?
Bis ca. 100 MB sollte funktionieren, im lokalen Modus hängt es vom RAM deines Geräts ab. Sehr lange Bücher (>1000 Seiten) können beim Indexieren spürbar dauern. Die Antwortsuche selbst ist immer schnell.
Was kostet Mit-PDF-chatten?
Der lokale Modus ist 100 % kostenlos und unbegrenzt nutzbar. Der optionale OpenAI-Modus verwendet deinen eigenen API-Schlüssel, die Kosten dafür entstehen direkt bei OpenAI (typischerweise wenige Cent pro Frage).
