Why turn a JPG into a PNG
Some programs, templates and upload fields demand PNG. Also, a JPG loses a bit of quality every time it is saved again. If you edit an image several times, for collages or presentations, you are better off continuing with a PNG copy.
What lossless means here
The PNG file holds every pixel exactly as it comes out of the JPG. Nothing more is lost, but nothing comes back either. Traces of JPG compression stay visible, the conversion does not sharpen or denoise anything.
Larger files are normal
Photos have countless fine colour gradations that PNG has to store without loss. The file often ends up several times the size of the JPG. That is impractical for email or web pages and just right for further editing.
The other way round
Want a PNG to get smaller, or a portal only takes JPG? There is PNG to JPG for that. You can combine several photos into one document with JPG to PDF.
