Papers and applications
Term papers, essays and cover letters often come with a word or character limit. Checking as you write means no frantic cutting at the end. It matters whether the limit counts spaces or not, the difference can easily be 15 percent.
Text for the web
Page titles in search results are usually cut off after around 60 characters, descriptions after about 155. Short posts and bios have fixed limits too. The character limit shows you how much room is left while you type.
Standard pages for translation and editing
Translators and editors often bill by the standard page of 1,500 characters including spaces, some by words or lines instead. Before accepting a quote, it helps to check the exact counting method so both sides agree on the same amount.
Talks and speeches
A five minute speech needs roughly 650 words. The speaking time here is based on 130 words per minute, a calm pace with pauses. Faster speakers need more text, those reading freely usually need less.
